I’m where I am today because SVC found me and believed in me. In 1990, I was a year out of high school and going nowhere. I had wanted to go to college and had done well in school, but didn’t think it was financially possible to make it happen. Although I was a part of my area’s Upward Bound program (assists low income students, of whom neither parent has achieved a college degree, to break the cycle and go to college), I still didn’t have the drive or parental support I needed to push me toward finding a way.
SVC’s student search team was contacting UB programs looking for potential students and my UB Director thought of me. They negotiated some of the financial aspects and then asked if I was interested. All I did was ask if they had Accounting before saying yes and planning my Greyhound bus trip from Michigan to Vermont. Thankfully, I had two wonderful Aunts who caught wind of my plan and informed me they would be driving me instead.
I knew absolutely zero about SVC or the surrounding area, but SVC with it’s beautiful and rural location, small class sizes, wonderful faculty and staff as well as diverse students is just what I needed coming from a small midwestern town (pop 1300). I ended up staying in Bennington, VT and am now the Finance Director for the Town of Bennington. Thank you SVC!
